Q Is the “The Metamorphosis” ever funny? If so, where? How? Why? How does the story resemble (and differ from) the family situation comedies we’re all familiar with?
There are certain elements in the novella which can be categorized under "funny". But the comedy is dark in nature which and it look at the work for an entirely different viewpoint. Gregor goes through a changes and this change is not at all pleasant for him. He loses his job, scares his own family and ends up being alone and dies in his room, in loneliness. The funny aspect can only be best understood from the "dark" perspective.
